What Causes Large, Red Acne That Take Long Time To Heal?

Hi! I m a 29 year old female weighing 164 lbs. I have been having problems with Acne since the past 4 years. The problem started when I was put on Metformin. It subsided when I stopped taking it after 2 months, but it never disappeared. I never had any problems with acne before and my family doesn t have problems either. I have high blood sugar (pre-diabetes) and hypothyroidism. I was diagonized with hypothyroidism a week back only, but the pre-diabetes was discovered about 4 years back (though I don t control my sugar intake). Can you please give some insight as to why I keep getting red, large acne all the time these days and why they take forever to heal and months to disappear? Thanks in advance for your time and consideration!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have large, red acne on face which occurs when there are clogged pores of sebaceous gland filled with sebum ,dead skin and bacteria get infected. It could be due to stress and hormonal changes as well. I would suggest you to use face wash containing 1-2% salicylic acid twice a day. Apply a gel containing clindamycin 1% in the morning over acne and Benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gel at night. Exfoliate your skin once in a week to remove the dead skin. Apply Adapelene gel once at night. If condition doesn't get better in a month then consult dermatologist again for proper diagnosis and to rule out any underlying condition. it will take around 2-3 months for these large acne to clear properly.Doctor may prescribe steroid ointment or antibiotics course. Take Multivitamin supplements.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
