What Causes Left-sided Dull Pain At Base Of Head While Sleeping?

Can you tell me what is going on when sleeping at night I sometimes awake with a dull pain at the base of my head on the left side. If I pull my head backwards it prevents me from straightening it out and flexing forward, at the same time experiencing back pain.
