What Causes Leg Cramps And Ankle Pain In An Elderly Person?

My 85 year old Mother is having severe nightly pain in her ankles, bottom of her feet and tense leg cramps, when she is at rest. She is in good health, volunteers at a local elementary school and lives independently with no other health issues. She does have an enlarged thyroid but is not treated for an under or over active thyroid. She has high blood pressure that is controlled by medicine. She does have issues with arthritis. These leg & feet cramps and painful ankles are keeping her from getting a good night s rest. She does not notice this pain when she is active. She wonders if this may be a circulation problem or something else. Do you have any suggestions on what conditions she should have checked or what specialist she should seek for advice? Thanks!

Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern.
leg cramps, pain in ankle and heel especially at night if also exacerbating by walking; is due to circulatory problem. Otherwise it is due to arthritis and controlling it with proper analgesic and physiotherapy will resolve the issue.
I would like to have her Doppler ultrasound lower limbs; if it was normal then do her nerve conduction studies.
Above investigations will help you to consult either vascular surgeon or neurologist respectively.
Hope it helps best.
