What Causes Light Spotting With Pain Instead Of Normal Menstruation?

I normally have heavy painful periods with dark red blood lasting 5-7 days. This time I m tired with very little pain and very light and bright red blood which has stopped after 2 days. A I m not on birth control had a tubal ligation three and a half years ago.
