What Causes Light Vaginal Bleeding After Taking Misoprostol For Abortion?

After taking mifepristone and misoprostol, there was some very light bleeding accompanied with a few clots thereafter I only stained for less than a day. I had missed my period for about 5 days prior to using both medications. I stopped staining on the second day and I have pregnancy symptoms. Help did the medication work at all?

OB & GYN Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

If you had taken those pills in correct manner under the guidance of local gynecologist, then abortion process could be completed.

Otherwise, it may lead to INCOMPLETE abortion or failed medical abortion as per light vaginal bleeding. In that case, I can suggest you to undergo blood test for beta-hCG and ultrasound scan to check retained bits and placental tissue if any.

Repeat dose of above medicine may be required to complete the abortion process or you may need to undergo D & C to evacuate uterine cavity.

Kindly, consult with your doctor and take suggestive measures accordingly. Practice safe sex in future. Good luck.
