What Causes Lip Whiteness And How To Treat It?

Hi, I'm 19yrs old and my upper and lower lips/gums where your lips meet is turning white all of a sudden. It looks like chew marks in a line across my lip. I do admit of biting my lips but have done for years but never anything that was consistent looking as this. Some online forums say I should gargle salt water but I feel as though that would dry my mouth out and will be pointless. Every time I talk it is very noticeable and embarrassing. I do sleep with my mouth close if thats any help and I brush my teeth every morning. I do not chew tobacco and haven't had this problem before. Please help me with this embarrassing look thanks....
