What Causes Long Black Hair Growth Around The Anus Of A Child?

I just discovered that my 6 1/2-year-old daughter has long, black hairs growing around her anus. She does not have pubic hair in front, nor does she have underarm hair. She also does not have breast buds. We are more than likely going to get a referral to a pediatric endocrinologist. However, I m wondering if there was a hormonal imbalance or issue with her pituitary gland or adrenal glands, wouldn t she have other symptoms (such as pubic hair in front, underarm hair, or breast buds)? Is this cause for concern? Have you ever seen anything like this before?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be a sign of congenital problems affecting the spine like spina bifida. Consult a neurosurgeon and get evaluated. An MRI scan is required for further treatment. Surgical correction may be needed in certain cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
