What Causes Lose Of Sense Of Smell/taste After Having Parathyroid Surgery?
I have lost my sense of smell and have a decreased sense of taste. At the time that I noticed this, I had just had parathyroid surgery and had a severe respiratory infection. I had also just started a new medication, Celebrex. Could any of these things cause this problem?
Hi Dear, Welcome to HCM. Understanding your concern.
Thanks for your query . The symptoms you mention in query sometimes occur after the surgery due to nerve damage . This occur during 'INTUBATION PROCEDURE' . During this procedure injury to nerves like glossopharyngeal , vagus or facial nerve occur while inserting laryngoscope for intubation which is responsible for loss of sense of taste and smell.
I would suggest to consult otolaryngologist for proper diagnosis and to rule ot condition like infection or GERD (acidic reflux) . Doctor may perform few test and prescribe medicine to reduce inflammation in injured nerves or corticosteroid drugs . Sometimes surgery is also required.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
