Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Loss Of Appetite And Sleeplessness While On Clonidine?
I have been taking Clonidine for about 2 weeks and I have been having trouble with not sleeping and stomach problems, loss of appetite mainly in my upper stomach. I can eat very little and am losing weight. I started taking it for high blood pressure, although I was already taking another one hydroclorthize during the day 50 mgs. But I think the side affects of Clonidine is not helping me. I would like to stop it can I do it with out weaning myself off of it?
I'm sorry to hear you've been having problems since starting Clonidine. I agree with you that Clonidine is likely the cause of your upper stomach pain and anorexia, as these are known side effects of Clonidine. I would recommend you contact your doctor if possible to talk about stopping Clonidine and switching to another blood pressure medication if you need to.
With Clonidine, it is important you don't stop it all at once, because your body is now used to the drug, and if you stop abruptly, you may have very high blood pressures, called "rebound hypertension". It is recommended that you gradually decrease the dose over 2 to 4 days to prevent this.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
