What Causes Loss Of Balance While Walking In An Elderly Person?

I am 87 years old. I have been reasonably active all my life. I am tall, thin and am now having balance problems in that once I am on my feet walking, I begin bending forward and lose my balance. With out stabilizing myself, I will fall. We can no longer take cruise vacations as I cannot walk the length of a large ship. What is causing this problem and can it be corrected?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for your query.

I shall make an effort to provide you with good professional recommendations specific to your questions.
You most likely have a condition called benign parxosymal positional vertigo.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is usually triggered by specific changes in the position of your head. This might occur when you tip your head up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed. Keeping your head still should rapidly stop any dizziness you feel.
I occurs due to same problem in inner ear.
I advice you to see ENT specialist, may be able to move your head in specific ways to free the misplaced otolith, which are causing the problem.

Yet again, I duly appreciate your query to me, I do hope that you have found something useful to help you and I shall be glad to answer any further apprehensions.

Sincerely,
I find this answer helpful
