To make a long story short. My mom has been addicted to xanax for 30 yrs and she has end stage COPD. She has lost her eyesight the lat months and we have taken her to all kinds of speciaist with all the tests. Dr's can not find anything wrong with her. Even taken xanax she has perpetual anxiety. Wakes up in the middle of the night with dellisions. What could be wrong? I am at my wits end. She lives with me and I have no help except hospice palliative care right now. HELP!!!! P>S> even her healthcare workers are thinking her eyesight lost is psychopymatic. What if her copd is too?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. A lot of elderly females develop such symptoms with advancing age. She has been taking Alprazolam since last 30 years and is also patient of COPD, both of these increase the risk of cognitive impairment. In advanced cognitive impairment individuals may develop psychosis like symptoms and may start behaving abnormally. Some times depression with psychotic symptoms may present with such symptoms. Electrolyte imbalance may also increase the risk of such symptoms, get her serum Sodium, Potassium and Calcium levels done to rule out any electrolyte imbalance. Please take her to a psychiatrist for evaluation of her symptoms and for treatment. Persuade her to quit Xanax as the drug is known to cause complications in elderly.

Hope this helps you. Thanks and Take care
