What Causes Loss Of Sense Of Taste?

I have completely lost the ability to taste any and all foods. If I touch the top sides of my nose, very painful. My nose is always full of bloody sores that are very difficult to blow out of my nose and seem to be attached to the insides of my nose. My tongue tingles and sometimes it feels like I ve eaten something extremely hot and it is also sometimes numb. I have cotton mouth all the time and get a horrible taste in my mouth. I get like a film in my mouth that I would normally get when I am sick but now I get it all the time. Any suggestions? thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

There are a variety of things that could result in loss of taste (which by the way is almost 100% of the time) connected to the sense of smell. Are you also lacking in this sensory modality?

There are not very many things that restrict the loss of taste to the front 1/4 of the tongue as you've described. And that is partly why a neurologist should be the one to examine you. An MRI of the brain is likely going to be necessary with gadolinium contrast in order to specifically look into the brain-stem area to see if there is anything of a lesion that is compromising the pathways of taste since this is mediated by the Trigeminal nerve found virtually in the "middle" of the brain-stem.

If you've had any laboratory work performed please upload those studies so that I may review them.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
