What Causes Loss Of Smell And Taste While Using Zicam Nasal Spray?

I sprayed zicam nasal spray up my nose Thursday at 10 am. It s now five days later and I still have not gained back my ability to smell or taste. I can smell a little better and a little more things,, but it s not fully back yet. Do u think this is permanent damage to my olfactory? How long will this last?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Brief answer - Chemical Trauma

As per your query you used Zicam nasal spray which caused loss of smell and taste in you which is a major side effect of this drug and this drug is banned by FDA because of this side effect.

I would suggest you to visit ENT specialist as early as you can and explain your anosmia to them and get examined and treated accordingly as Zicam has toxic dose of zinc which can cause permanent loss of smell and taste. Be aware before using any drug. Your CT scan is must and after that heavy doses of Prednisone can rejuvenate your taste.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
