What Causes Low HDL Cholesterol Levels?

Hello Dr, My Lipid details are as following Total Cholestrol - 74 Tryglycerides - 138 HDL cholestrol - 12 LDL Cholestrol - 34 VLDL cholestrol - 27 I Understand that my HDL Cholestrol is quite low,pls let me know the probable reasons for this low count & what should be done to improve it.
