What Causes Low Blood Counts When Diagnosed With Advanced Prostate Cancer?
My father in law is 91, terminal with advanced prostate cancer, hemochromatosis, constant replacement of stent between bladder and kidney, pneumonia, but alert and active at this time. His body is not producing WBC and RBC and platelets. What changes will we see as the body shuts down. We are not given any final time frame. Thank you, Barbara
Hello and welcome to HCM, Advanced prostate cancer and hemochromatosis can both affect the bone marrow function. Hemochromatosis when advanced can replace the bone marrow with iron containing cells and thus affecting the normal functioning of bone marrow. Prostate cancer and many other cancers can produce such chemicals which decrease the production of normal constituents of bone marrow. Along with infections like pneumonia, the condition is going to worsen. Thus, control of hemochromatosis is necessary to improve the blood counts. Prostate cancer also needs palliative cancer. Infections like pneumonia also need to be treated. I suggest you to consult your oncologist and hematologist for further management on the basis of symptoms.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
