What Causes Low EGFR Count?

My eGFR blood count was found to be way too low (36) a while back and my GP referred me to a neufrologist (sp.) I am a Type II diabetic. I also have issues with my blood pressure and am taking medications for both those conditions which have been effective. Because of the low eGFR count the renal physician told me to stop taking metformin and the ARB medication. I go back to see him this week. My question is can that estimated bilirubin count (eGFR) ever be increased or once it s that low am I already in deep trouble re kidney disease ?

Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a derived value that gives us an idea about your kidney function.
Bilirubin is related to the liver.

There are multiple factors that can affect kidney function and hence eGFR.
Medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension, for instance, medications, Infections can all affect kidney function.

Metformin and ARB (among other medications) can harm your kidneys and hence needs regular monitoring.

I recommend :
-a physician consult every month. To check blood pressure, cardiac status, medications (dosage)
- kidney and liver function tests, blood glucose panel, lipid profile monitoring at least twice a year or as advised by your doctor.
-ultrasound of the kidneys
-take the medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
-hydrate yourself adequately unless you have been advised water restriction.

Yes EGFR can improve with time. This depends on the the cause and other associated medical issues.
Only time will tell.

Please discuss with your doctor for further clarification about the prognosis of your current clinical status.
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you good health
