What Causes Low Haemoglobin Level In Blood?

My 76 year old mother is hospitalized because of severely low hemoglobin and hematocrit. She s scheduled for a colonoscopy tomorrow but has a very difficult time keeping down the prep drink. Since she s already on an IV, is there an IV laxative they can use as an alternative to the drink?
