What Causes Low Heart Rate?

My father is having some issues today with heart rate. He had bypass surgery probably 15+ years ago with no issues since. His heart rate today has been in the 50 s to mid 60 s and at one point went to 40. Wondering if we should go to emergency room or wait and have a dr. Check it out tomorrow.
