What Causes Low Pulse Rate Inspite Of Taking Verepamil?

My husband s pulse has been in the mid 30 s but his BP has been normal. His dr took him off Toprol and put him on Verapamil, and the pulse rate came up (70 s) for about 10 days. It has again dropped into the 30 s, and his last BP was 139/49. The diastolic has been steadily dropping. He has been in contact with his regular physician, who said he was going to refer him to an electrophysiologist. So far, the referral has not been made, and I am concerned about the downward trend in his pulse and, now, his BP. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved husband.

After having gone through your query, I am of the opinion that the low pulse rate and low BP are attributed to the side effects of Calcium channel blocker Verapamil.

Verapamil is a heart depressant drug known to cause low pulse rate & BP.
He may need drugs like Amlodipine or ACE Inhibitors like Lisinopril to control his high BP without lowering the pulse rate.

Hope to have answered your query.
