Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi - I m a woman of 70, with normal blood pressure, very slightly overweight, a good diet. I ve always had a low pulse - recently it is often in the low 50s (at rest). When I walk, climb stairs quickly etc - it increases and after a short time when I m resting again, it returns to a low level. I m generally asymptomatic - but sometimes feel tired. Should I worry?
A resting heart rate lower than 60/minute is termed as bradycardia. However, in some cases even a lower resting heart rate in 50"s may be normal, if it is not accompanied by any symptom of heart involvement. It may be normally present in athletes as well as in overactive persons. However, if there are symptoms of fainting, early tiredness, chest pain, breathlessness on minimum activity or persistent palpitation etc., then you are advised to see your doctor about your heart work up.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
