What Causes Low Vitamin D Levels In Blood?

My doctor took a blood count yesterday and my vitamin D is low. She said it is an 18 and she called in a script for me to take twice a week for 8 weeks? Is this a vitamin deficiency? She also said that once we get my levels back up, I will have to take vitamin D all of the time. Is this serious?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is a deficiency of vitamin D if she stated that these particular levels are low.

Vitamin D deficiency can be associated with increased risk of heart disease and stroke, cognitive impairment in older persons (difficulty thinking or concentrating), rarely cancer.

If you are able to get your levels to normal then these risks would be reduced.

I hope this helps
