What Causes Lower Abdominal Cramps After Insertion Of Mirena?

Had mirena inserted 24 days ago, have had bleeding everyday all day, changing a heavy flow pad every 4 hours roughly.... Cramping everyday also for roughly 8 hours a day intermittently. I take pain reliever at night to sleep so I do not have disturbed sleep, but I do not anything during the day as to monitor the contractions and if they will get severe. I am not sure if this something I should now be concerned about as I am waiting it out knowing there are side effects, and also I am sure these questions happen frequently. If I can avoid a trip to the hospital for this knowing it may pass would be phenomenal. Please advise. The cramps are always low abdominal, same area as menstrual cramping would occur, when the cramps are strongest I have back ache. When strong cramping occurs I tend to bleed quite heavily, minimal clotting....

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite common after Mirena insertion and will settle by itself.
As first-line management, you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief.
If symptoms persist better to consult a gynecologist and get evaluated.
In that case we have to check whether the IUD is misplaced or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
