What Causes Lowering Of Heart Rate On Having Sugary Foods?

Can a blood sugar dump make the heart rate slow down too? Mu hubby has COPD and is on oxygen. He has a normally low heart rate any way. But his heart rate can get down to 48 or 47 in the morning. We have found that a couple crackers with peanut butter and honey make him feel better and also the heart rate stays about 54 or 53.Then we get a high protein breakfast with in a few m inutes. He is 85 and other wise in good health. He exercises on a regular basis with weights and elipical trainer.

Hi,

While it's not common for sugary foods to lower heart rates, there are some possible explanations for the effect your husband is experiencing. One possibility is that the sugar causes a rapid rise in blood sugar, triggering the release of insulin to bring it back down. This can cause a temporary drop in blood sugar, which may lead to symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue, and possibly a lower heart rate.

Another possibility is that peanut butter and honey provide a quick source of energy, which can help improve overall feelings of well-being and potentially improve heart rate. It's also possible that this effect is related to the protein in the peanut butter, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and promote feelings of fullness.

However, it's important to note that a heart rate of 48-53 bpm is within the normal range for some people, particularly those who exercise regularly. It's also not uncommon for the heart rate to be lower in the morning, as the body tends to naturally slow down during sleep.

If your husband is concerned about his heart rate or experiences any other symptoms, it's important to talk to his doctor. They may want to perform further tests or adjust his medications if necessary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
