What Causes Lump At The End Of Back?

I have had a lump at the end of my back since I was born, it has small light thin birthmarks on it and it is not hard it just feels like extra fat or something I ve never thought much about it because I would think when I was younger that doctors would have told me if it was/is dangerous. It hasn t grown over the years and does not hurt or bother at all. I would just like to find out what it is? If its bad or if I have to go check it out. I just didn t want to go to the doctors and it being nothing to worry about.

Hi,

What you are describing is consistent with a lipoma. They are not connected to the skin and are under it, so that there may be birthmarks or other atypical skin findings on top. Lipomas are growths of fat. They form soft bulges that can be a few inches in diameter. They do not cause any harm unless they are in a position that bothers you. No need to do anything unless it causes you irritation or you want it removed for cosmetic reasons.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong, General & Family Physician
