What Causes Lump On Lower Abdomen?

In the shower this afternoon I discovered a small, soft mass underneath the skin on my lower abdomen, located just to the left and above my penis. There was no pain whatsoever, nor was there any pain or sensitivity when i touched it. I do not recall it being present when I showered yesterday morning. It extended about one centimeter above the surface of the normal , surrounding skin and was generally oval in shape, about 3 cm on the short axis and 4 cm on the long axis.I am 77 years old, 6 3 and weigh 175; generally I m in good shape, chief exercise being walking. Yesterday I walked 8 miles with 1200 elevation gain and today 3 miles with 250 gain. This was just before getting into the shower. It is now about 6 hours later and when we returned home from a dinner with friends I took another look and the lump has subsided to the point where I can now neither feel or see anything.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

From your description most likely you have an inguinal hernia. This is the only kind of lump which can appear and disappear suddenly. There might be some pain in this area as well however it is not always present.
Please try to perform simple test. Put your hand on the area where the lump was present and try to cough few times while standing. If the lump will appear, hernia it is.
IN case of any doubts, ultrasound of this area is a good idea.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
