What Causes Lump On The Upper Side Of Shoulder?

My son is 14 yrs old and has found a small lump/ball on the back upper right side of his left shoulder. There s no pain just concern of what it is. It seems to be somewhat deep. Not like a insect bite. It also feels very dense. He is not an athlete so I know he hasn t gotten injured. Should I take him to a Dr soon?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
A lump on back needs to be investigated.
A painless lump on the back is most likely to be due to soft tissue swelling like lipoma, fibroma, etc.
Further investigations like an aspiration of the lesion is required to know the nature and character of the lesion.
In aspiration cytology, a thin needle is introduced into the swelling, cells are aspirated, spread on a glass slide, stained with appropriate stains and then examined microscopically.
Further management can be planned after clinical assessment and relevant investigations.

Thanks and take care
