What Causes Lumps On The Neck With Tenderness Of Neck?

Hello I am just wondering about some issues I ve been having with my neck. Obviously I do know that I need to get further checked by my doctor but you may be able to help me understand what s going on or may be going on. About 5 or so months ago I noticed a lump on the left side of my neck that is hard and moves just slightly (I was pregnant at the time so didn t think I should be poked and prodded at till I had her) now it is much larger and I have noticed some more on both sides. I so have one just at the base of my skull that does not move and it hard. They do not hurt but my neck is tender to the touch. I also had a cervical fusion 3 years ago on July 22nd.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Lumps in the neck are commonly caused due to infection by bacteria or virus. Other medical causes may be swelling of the lymph nodes or salivary gland, tonsillitis, tumor, cancer, etc. Chondrosarcomas commonly occur at the skull base and may include headache, tenderness, discomfort, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get blood tests, investigations and imaging tests done.

Your treating doctor may suggest biopsy and may refer you to an ENT for further management. You will be assessed and treated accordingly. You can take Acetaminophen, one SOS when needed to ease discomfort. Stay away from addictions if any & stay well hydrated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
