What Causes Memory Loss And Dizziness When Diagnosed With Hypertension?

My mother is 87 years old and has recently been exhibiting signs of memory loss, specifically of basic daily tasks, such as using the oven or the stove, and frequently visited areas seem unfamiliar to her. She has been given a low dose of donezipan. Yesterday she was off balance and fell. Although she experienced some dizziness before this medication, I was wondering if she may not be tolerating it well. She also has hypertension for which she takes Lisinopril 1x day, Vit D and B12. We are awaiting a full memory study in October, but in the meantime I am concerned about this medication. Your thoughts???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history your mother seems to be suffering from symptoms suggestive of Alzheimer's disease for which she was given the medicine donepezil. Donepezil does not cure Alzheimer's disease, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to function.

It may cause dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, or muscle cramps as the body adjusts to the drug. These effects usually last 1-2 weeks and then decrease. If they persist beyond this period her doctor should be informed for an alternate effective but a safer medicine.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
