What Causes Memory Problems With Mood Swings In An Elderly Lady?

My mother in law has been getting more forgetful lately, shorter attention span, childlike behaviors and speech, somewhat more emotional as well. I have tried to bring it up to my husband but he seems to be ignoring the problem. What could it possibly be?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Memory problems, forgetfulness, reduced attention span, child like behaviour, emotional swings etc in an elderly individual could occur due to a number of reasons. Dementia especially initial stages can present with similar presentation. I'd advise you to take her to a neuropsychiatrist for evaluation. MMSE or mini mental status examination can help to find out any cognitive decline and this can help in ruling out dementia. Medicines like Donepezil or Memantin can be used for such symptoms and can help to reduce the progression. Please consult a psychiatrist for evaluation.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
