What Causes Metallic Smelling Diarrhoea?

What are the causes of a copper or metallic smelling diarrhea?? I have raised several chronic children and recall the smell of when someone on the unit would get C Diff.... This seems very very similar to me.... But it s been a few years since I last dealt with C Diff.... And now I am the one who is sick.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Symptoms can occur due to certain food and drinks that you may have taken. Take antidiarrheal to get rid of loose stools. Taking iron rich food or sulfur rich food, vitamin B supplements, will help to control the symptoms. Metallic smelling stool can be also caused by Crohn's disease, celiac disease and ulcerative colitis. Other underlying medical conditions that can cause metallic smelling stool is kidney disease, gastroenteritis, chronic liver disease , IBD, etc. Consult a general physician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
