What Causes Miscarriage?

Im 5 weeks pregnant (1st pregnancy) and went to the ER today because I was bleeding and saw blood clots... All my blood work came back ok, they took a vaginal ultrasound.. They measured me at 6 weeks and saw no fetal pole, so they said that I was having a miscarriage... I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow... I sooooo confused..
