What Causes Missed Periods, Cramps And Spotting While On Birth Control?

my girlfriend has bee put on birth control and missed her two last periods. we took 2 pregnancy test and both were negative and yesterday she was getting cramps and light bleeding so i was wondering if you think that it is a possibility if she is pregnant or if we should go to the doc and see what is wrong?
