What Causes Muffled Hearing After Taking A Flight?

Flew from Maui to Chicago 4/12/15 . Very muffled hearing for 2 days. Did not have a cold, sinus infection, or any respiratory problem. Hearing is slightly better 4/14/15, but can t listen to tv unless the volume is turned up, can t talk on phone. Had rather super acute hearing prior to this flight. Have tried everything I could find on the Internet. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Eustachian tube dysfunction can occur as a result of air travel thought there are other possible causes.

The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of a part of the throat.

The use of decongestants and anti histamines may help.

In addition the valsava maneuver may also help you (closing mouth, pinching nose while pressing out/blowing out).

I hope this helps
