What Causes Muscle Contractions In Right Calf When I Lay Down?

hi, the last 2 nights as soon as i lay down in bed I can feel muscle contractions in my right calf that seem random in location and intensity. Twice last night the muscle developed a sudden & painful full spasm. I was able to stretch it out quickly but the result is 2 nights of nearly no sleep until it subsides in the morning hours 4-5am. Overall it s not very painful, but annoying. It also happens nearly exclusively at night, only very little during the day. I don t feel any other tingling in the leg and the left calf is largely unaffected. It seems to happen more on days when I run, especially in the evening but yesterday was an exception--I did not run but spent most of the day on my feet. I m vitamin D deficient and responding to therapy slowly but still too low. I also take blood pressure medicine with a diuretic. I take radinitine fairly frequently for heartburn as well. Other than those, i m healthy having an annual physical and full cardio stress test recently. Another note--since a child my fingers and toes have been significantly sensitive to cold weather, going numb and turning somewhat white much easier than other people. not sure if that s relevant. I also have a hard time all my life with sitting still for more than a few minutes. I seem to shift body positions and leg positions much more than others. I ve noticed this for the last 20 years at least. I m now 49 yrs old. Any ideas?

Hi,

Tab Natalins Rx for a week single dose and check vitamin B levels, calcium, parathormone and obviously D levels [take sachets as prescribed]. All can be causes in combinations. Take at least good sun exposure [10 am to 3 pm], if severe UV B therapy can be tried. A diet rich in fortified milk, oranges, swiss cheese also have few mushrooms. Take fruits, steamed vegetables, coconut water, amla, aloe vera is also helpful.

600IU day is required. vitamin D and levels to be repeated after 2 weeks. Toxicity is more dangerous too [with calcium and parathormone]. Blood sugar and electromyography can be used for diagnosis. Take tab Ibuprofen for pain. Don't use it regularly. Advil can be taken.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sunny Madar, General & Family Physician
