What Causes Muscle Cramps And Sciatica Post Spinal Fusion Surgery?

Six years ago, I had spinal fusion at l4, l5 and s1. The first two years it felt like I was being burned and a switch taken to my legs. After many doctor visits, the pain clinic advised me that my electircal system was messed up . Now, I am prone to muscle cramps, sciatiaca and neuropathy in both feet that are worse than other days. Now, I have pain that comes and goes in both of my legs.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have muscle cramps and sciatica post spinal fusion surgery. Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg . Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disk in your spine or by an overgrowth of bone on your vertebrae . The symptoms can also occur due to complication of surgery.I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan ,MRI , myelogram , nerve conduction test along with physical examination . Doctor may prescribe percocet , gabapentin , muscle relaxant along with cortisone injection . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy and surgery in some severe cases.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
