What Causes Muscle Cramps In Legs And Chest Despite Suffering From RLS?

i have muscle cramps. not just in legs but in sides.. left and right... below my ribs... and here lately it is happening more and more frequently. I also suffer from Restless Leg Syn. The only medications I take are Meripex (generic) and Zoloft (also generic). This is driving me crazy and the frequency is starting to scare me. I am 65, I keep my grandson during the week and that s pretty much all the exercise I get. I leave home by 7 am and don t get home until 6:pm-ish so not a lot of free time. any ideas? I haven t had any blood work done since last year, but it was all good. I have mild COPD. and I smoke.. shhh. i don t drink or have any other vices . am in overall good health most of the time. any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The muscle spasms are more commonly due to low calcium / vitamin D levels in blood. Replacemrnt and exercises mostly help. Another cause especially in the sixties can be degenerative disease of the vertebrae - spondylitis. It needs an X-ray and MRI to diagnose. Pain medicine over the counter and physiotherapy would help. Sometimes spinal surgery may be needed to relieve pressure on supplying nerves. Consultation of family physician / spinal surgeon is needful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
