What Causes Muscle Cramps?

i have a friend who keeps having muscle cramps on ride side of body and says the joints are popping also. he said it started off with his whole body twitching and arms and legs shooting straight outward. the right knee is swollen like a football and pain under ribcage,neck,back,and hip paralysis. it feels like somebody ran him over with a semi truck he says.
