What Causes Muscle Hardening And Pain Below The Ribcage?

i have been experiencing this hardening of the muscle right below my left lower rib cage,it bulges...it's painful but it goes away after 10-15 seconds.i usually massage it til it goes away,it feels like a muscle cramps in the legs...what could this be?could this be something serious?thank you
