What Causes Muscle Spasms In The Lower Back And Abdomen?

I develop cramping pain and muscle spasms in my lower torso when I stand for more than 5 minutes or walk for any distance. It s debilitating. The pain usually starts in the lower right abdomen or lower right back and can wrap around my whole lower torso. If I sit down the cramping subsides almost immediately returns when I stand. When I have had gyn exams doctors have remarked that my muscles are in spasm. The same remark was made about the muscles of my bladder during a recent internal exam. I have had this problem for over 6 years and it is getting worse. What can be causing this? Thanks for any insight you can provide. Diane YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It looks like Interstitial Cystitis & can be triggered by physical stress, periods, certain food or drinks(carbonated drinks, alcohol, caffeine, etc). You are suggested to visit a GP & get physically examined.

Get all blood, urine & Imaging tests done to rule out UTI, Endometriosis, kidney stones, bladder cancer, STD, prostrate (in a male).

Your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected. In the meantime, take plenty of water. For relieving from the pain you can take antacids, PPI's & spasmol (spasmoproxyvon when needed).

Get all blood & Imaging tests done. Get assessed & treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
