What Causes Muscles Spasms In The Lower Back While On Rifampicin?

I am on antibiotics for Mac infection in lung. On the days I take rifampin I have muscle spasms in my low back. One time a few days ago the spasms started suddenly and were the most painful event I have ever been through. The pain ans spasms radiated down my legs and into my left shoulder. The event lasted about 5 minutes. I have been on these meds since February and was off them for about 2 weeks with stomach issue. This has only occurred since I have been back on them.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Rifampicin may not cause the muscular pain but other drug like levofloxacin or ofloxacin used in mycobacterial infection may cause the muscular pain but it is the temporary pain and soon it will go away, you were not supposed to stop the medication if the course of drug therapy is not being completed. Paracetamol can be tried for the pain and it is nothing to worry.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Akhtar Husain
