What Causes Mushy Lump On The Back After A Fall?

My husband works in the coal mines! He had fell at least a good 10ft maybe more! He s home resting but is very stiff! Any movement and he s almost in tears! I had to undress him so he could shower! In the lower right side of his back ( directly at the end of his ribs) is a lump, it s not hard or mushy, just a lump the size of my hand ( from middle finger tip, to the end of Palm ). I can not get him to go to the ER. I made him take 800mg of ibuprofen and put some Icy hot on his back. Is there anything to really be concerned about?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to musculo-skeletal injury.
The swelling is due to the impact as well as accumulation of fluid and blood after the fall.
X ray of the chest and spine can be done to rule out any pathological cause for the symptoms.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained by application of ice, analgesic & muscle relaxant gel, intake of analgesics like Diclofenac/ Ibuprofen (to be taken after food) + Pantoprazole (to be taken 30 minutes before meals).
Supplements of Calcium & Vitamin D can be included in his diet which will help in strengthening of bones.

So, kindly consult your Doctor/ Orthopaedician for proper clinical evaluation and management.

There is no need to worry, he will be fine.
Till then, he should maintain adequate hydration & nutrition status, take proper rest and avoid stress.

Wishing him a Good Health.
Take care.
