What Causes Myopia In One Eye And Hyperopia In Another?

I am near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other eye and need cataract surgery on both eyes. Two physicians have recommeded an implant for far sighted in one eye and one for near sighted in the other eye because your brain has already adjusted to the difference . However, another surgeon said this did not work as well as I had been lead to believe and I would loose my depth perception. I cannot find anyone who has had this surgery and cannot find any info on line. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Early diagnosis of antimetropia is of utmost importance, as with time brain tries to adjust the focus of weak eye by the other eye for bifocal vision. Therefore correction with glasses may not be a solution, as it may cause disturbed sensation of depth as well as difference in image size in both eyes. Therefore, even in young children, contact lenses may be the only solution.

Since contact lenses are thin and directly rest on the surface of eye, thus result in little or no effect on size of images as well as sensation of depth, resulting in a more natural vision. In your case, as the cataract removal will be a primary requirement, therefore further detailed evaluation of degree of amblyopia and likely benefits vs risks have to be analysed before going for a final mode of treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
