What Causes Nasal Bleeding After Undergoing Cochlear Implant Surgery?

My 4 year ok daughter had cochlear implant surgery on Friday. She intermittently has a bloody nose in the nostril on the same side where the CI was implanted. It s not a lot, and it s very red, but we did not have this when she had the other side implanted 2 year ago. Is this something to be worried about?

Hello,

Nasal bleeding after cochlear implant surgery is not a common complication, but it can occur due to several reasons. One possibility is that the surgeon may have accidentally nicked a small blood vessel during the procedure, which is now causing intermittent bleeding. Another possibility is that the nose may be getting dried out due to the use of nasal oxygen during the surgery, which can cause minor bleeding in some people.

In most cases, nasal bleeding after cochlear implant surgery is not a cause for concern and tends to resolve on its own. However, if the bleeding persists or becomes more frequent, or if your daughter develops other symptoms such as fever, headache, or dizziness, it is important to seek medical attention right away. This could be a sign of a more serious complication, such as an infection or a problem with the implant itself.

To help prevent further bleeding, you can try using a humidifier in your daughter's room to keep the air moist, and avoid blowing her nose or putting anything inside her nostrils. If the bleeding continues or worsens, it is best to contact her surgeon or pediatrician for further evaluation and treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Nasal bleeding after cochlear implant surgery is not uncommon. The surgery involves drilling a small hole through the skull, which can cause some bleeding from the nose, particularly in the first few days after the procedure. The bleeding may also be related to the manipulation of the tissues in the nasal cavity during surgery.

In most cases, the bleeding is mild and self-limiting, meaning it stops on its own within a few hours or days. However, if the bleeding is severe or persistent, it may indicate a more serious problem, such as infection or injury to the nasal tissues or blood vessels.

It is important to monitor the bleeding and report any concerns to your daughter's surgeon. They may recommend nasal saline rinses or nasal packing to help control the bleeding. They may also want to examine your daughter to rule out any complications from the surgery. It is always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical attention if you have any doubts or concerns about your daughter's postoperative recovery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
