What Causes Nasal Bleeding While On Statins?

Every time I m on any statin drugs for more than 3 weeks, I begin to have nosebleeds for no reason, I can be just sitting and suddenly blood starts streaming from my nose. When I tell the doctors I believe the statins are causing this and they just as much as call me a liar, but when I m not taking statins I never have nosebleeds, what could be causing this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite possible that may have nose bleeding (Epistaxis) due to high blood pressure which is one of the most common causes of nose bleeding in middle-aged and elderly. I am off the opinion that kindly visit an ENT doctor and a physician who will rule out causes of the same and also monitor the blood pressure to rule out high BP as one of the causes. Statins per se don't cause a nose bleed but since you are on cholesterol-lowering medication, causes like high BP need to be ruled out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Riyanka Chail, General & Family Physician
