What Causes Nausea And Diarrhea After Taking Amoxicillin Clavulanate?
My daughter has been taking amox-clav 875 since Monday evening. Since then she has been nauseous and has had diarrhea. Tonight after at least 5 times with diarrhea, she has some bleeding when she goes to the bathroom. It’s bright red, somewhat mucus’s. Temp of 100.2.is this anything to be concerned about...she also has the chills off and on.
1. although nausea, vomiting, diarrhea are documented ADR [adverse drug reaction] of the drug but two major points to remember are:
i. use of amoxicillin-clavulanate is associated with candida superinfection which could be responsible for diarrhea as suggested by multiple loose or watery bowel movements, without blood or mucus.
ii. Use of the drug can cause Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea [which can cause mild diarrhea or severe inflammation of the colon and resulting bleeding], so my recommendation is
- many cases can be resolved without antibiotic treatment and this will resolve the problem, however, if the antibiotic is still required, there should be discontinuation of the implicated agent [amoxicillin-clavulanate in your case] and substitute it with a drug less likely to cause this complication. [mine preferred choice would be oral metronidazole].
2. If a new fever has arisen check with your doctor to exclude any other superadded infection.
