What Causes Nausea While On Iron Supplements?

My hematologist/oncologist had me take OTC iron supplements the past 2-3 years because my hemoglobin levels were gradually declining sightly. I was diagnosed with smoldering multiple myeloma in April, 2010. It has remained smoldering. In fact, my labs have actually gotten better except for hemoglobin. Last month I began having severe nausea a few hours after taking a dose of iron. My dr advised me to discontinue iron. The nauseous feelings have continued. My pharmacist said iron could have caused a wound in my stomach that needs to heal. How is the best way to get it to heal? What foods might help healing and what are likely to cause more irritation?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Iron therapy sometimes can cause gastritis and nausea. best way is to stop iron therapy for few days. Drink plenty of water and non-oily non spicy food. That will help in faster healing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
