Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Doctor, My name is Shreeja and currently living in Melbourne, Australia. I checked my Thyroid levels 2 months back and was diagnosed with Hypo Thyroids. I started taking Oroxine Tablets and had 3 blood tests done and my level was normal. since we are trying for baby my GP suggested me to take Folic Acid tablets in the night, also I am taking Vitamin D supplements with the Thyroid Tablet in the morning on an empty stomach. Since then I am having neck pain and feel that my Thyroid Levels are going high again. Please advise if I am following the correct steps?
I agree that the thyroxine tablets are to be taken on an empty stomach in the morning. Make sure you wait at least 30 minutes before you take your breakfast, or else it will defeat the purpose of taking it on an empty stomach. It is quite possible that the vitamin D may have disturbed the absorption of the thyroxine tablets and made it less effective. I would advise that you take the vitamin D supplements with your meal, since it actually does get absorbed better with an oily meal.
The folic acid tablets are more flexible, ideally it is consumed on an empty stomach, so you can take it at night. However, if you find it too difficult to have three different doses to remember, then you can combine it with your vitamin D, since the usual supplements have way more than enough folic acid required to keep a pregnancy healthy.
Hope this helps, and all the best to you.
Regards, Dr. Teh
