What Causes Neck Pain While Turning Head Left?

I have neck pain that shoots a little down my back. It hurts when I turn my head left. I think there is a lump on the back of my neck(slightly left of my spine) that is spongy. When I tilt my head back it is more apparent. Sometimes it feels better too.
