What Causes Nose Bleeding?

For the first time in my 69 years, I have gotten a sudden, painless nosebleed three times in the past three days. I have learned to love greens and eggs for breakfast and have that most every morning. This week we had all four of my faves: kale, spinach, bok choy, and romaine. I suppose I ODd on Vit K, perhaps? If so, how long should I lay off of it to fix this? Is there a safe amount each day?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The commonest cause of nose bleeding is nose-picking & drying of the nasal mucosa.

It can be due to injury, allergy, sinusitis, high blood pressure & sometimes bleeding disorders (use of blood thinning medications). Alcohol abuse is also a cause.

Cut on alcohol intake & addictions if any. Avoid blowing out your nose too hard. Stop picking nose. Do not take medicines like Ibuprofen or clopidogrel without the prescription of your treating doctor.

Visit ER & get physically examined, get Imaging tests & investigations done to detect the pathology causing the defect.

In the meantime, keep your nasal mucosa moist by applying vaseline, Neosporin or bactracin ointment. Get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
