What Causes Numbness And Burning Sensation On The Lips?

No one seems to help including my Dr. I have this constant burning, numbing, and turning brown of my lips for over 2 months. Dr. prescribed steroids for 7 days and regular chapstick but I find the only relief is petroleum jelly. Lately, when eating sweet or salty foods, it stings/burns badly until I put petroleum jelly on it. I have been a sweet eater for over 40 years plus and a within the last 5 years - diabetic. I have tried to reduce my intake of sugar and for about 10 years when I was eating sugar, rarely ever got a cold. So do you think my less eating sugar is causing cold like cold sores in my mouth two weeks ago and now I have a cold sore on the outside today along with a sore throat. It seems as if when I ate sugar, I couldn t get a cold, now a lot of cold like issues along with the numbing and browness of my tongue is so prevalent in me getting colds. The numbness is irritating. Oh, by the way, I have been drinking Gatorade drinks for at least 5-7 weeks.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of numbness and burning sensation on the lips which seems to be due to hypoglycemia, allergic reaction or trauma to lip wither physical trauma like injury or from extreme temperature such as sun exposure.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to take over the counter antihistamine drug like benadryl and keep your lip moist by applying lip balm containing broad spectrum sunscreen stop usin any product on face or inside mouth if you start it recently and apply clove oil at night . If condition still persist then consult dermatologist for proper examination and to rule out any other underlying disease. Doctor may order blood test and prescribe topical/oral antibiotics/antiviral depending upon the condition and topical steroid.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
